2026 TCAA Chihuahua Spurs
Learning the rules is only the beginning.
The Chihuahua spur has always been personal to Wilson Capron.
Growing up near the Mexican border, the form and influence of Mexican craftsmanship became part of his visual vocabulary long before he began making bits and spurs of his own.
Chihuahua spurs traditionally offer a maker something Wilson has always appreciated: room to work. Wide heel bands and large rowels create a generous canvas for engraving, silverwork, proportion and movement.
But for his 2026 TCAA piece, Wilson wasn't interested in simply repeating the traditional form.
He wanted to explore what happens when a maker understands a tradition well enough to begin changing it.
Movement in the Rowel
The rowel points curve rather than following the expected straight architecture. Each tine appears to move outward from the center, giving an otherwise static piece of steel a sense of motion.
A Rowel Within the Rowel
Traditional beveling often creates a V-shaped groove between each rowel point. Here, Wilson changed the filing angle to create another point between the tines—almost suggesting a second rowel hidden inside the first.
Breaking the Architecture
The hook normally associated with the front portion of the shank has been moved toward the rear third of the design. It is a small shift, but one that intentionally challenges the expected proportions of the Chihuahua form.
Western Meets Victorian
The 1.125-inch heel bands allow room for bold silver layouts and engraving. At the center, intricate sterling silver scrollwork takes influence from early Victorian design rather than traditional Western ornamentation—introducing elegance and contrast without losing the identity of the piece.
